Roof damage isn't something you're likely to worry about or notice as you approach your home. We're generally relieved to see the clouds lift and the light come through after a week of storms. But keep in mind that hail or high winds might have caused substantial damage to your roof during those storms. The roof may have dents, loose shingles, and/or missing asphalt patches. Wind Can Cause Damage to Your Home

Wind may cause damage to a property, something many homeowners are unaware of. High winds can result in dangers such as falling branches, uprooted trees, and downed power lines on your property and in the surrounding region. While these threats are typically associated with a major storm, the wind alone can cause structural damage to your home. 

Shingles can loosen or fall from a roof when severe winds blow. Even fresh, secure shingles might be torn away by strong wind speeds. Damage to a roof caused by falling materials and debris, such as tree branches and downed powerlines, is another type of wind damage.

Roofs are particularly vulnerable to wind damage, in part due to the fact that severe winds do not strike roofs uniformly. Wind, on the other hand, is more likely to harm the roof's edges or places that are already loose. Because winds may more readily pull up loose shingles, producing a chain reaction, these unsecured areas of the roof are obvious targets. Falling items and debris are also prevalent causes of roof damage. After a period of sustained wind damage, your roof may begin to leak or decay as a result of water exposure.

What wind speeds should you be concerned about?

• 45 - 57 mph- Winds of 45 mph can cause little damage, according to the National Weather Service, although this range is classified as "non-severe." Non-severe winds may force tree limbs to break off, causing harm to shingles that are already loose or vulnerable.
• 58 - 74 mph- When winds get very strong, they can cause major damage to landscape and structures. Winds in this range will bring down entire tree branches, uproot trees, peel off shingles in good shape, and cause chimney problems.
• 75+ mph- At this pace, trees will be uprooted, mobile homes will be flipped, and business and residential roofs will be severely damaged.

Identifying Wind Damage to Your Roof

Loose or missing shingles, chimney difficulties, curling or peeling shingles, granule loss, damaged soffit or fascia, and inside leaks are all signs of wind damage on a roof. Tree branches can also fall during high winds, causing roof damage.
